Do you get annoyed from chopping your wood with heavy axe? Cutting wood is hard work! It takes both, and sometimes the effort feels like too much. Or else you are dropping some serious coin on a store-bought wood splitter? If the answer is yes, then we have great news for you! It is easier than you think, but you can make your own wood splitter in the comfort of your home. You can build the splitter using some common materials — and with help from Kesen. So let’s dive into this fun project!
You will need, first of all, to collect some items that are not difficult to acquire. You will need a hydraulic cylinder, a control valve, a hydraulic pump, a steel plate, some metal pipes, and some welding tools. You should be able to find these materials at your local hardware store, or ask around at your local welding shop. For that reason, please have everything in place before you start your building process.
As soon as you’ve got everything, it’s time to construct your wood splitter! First, you wanna take the steel plate and divide it into three pieces. You have to find one piece for the base which will touch the ground, find one piece for the holder of the cylinder, and find out one more piece which will push the wood which we have to crush. You will then need to weld these components into a solid frame once you have the pieces. This frame is critical because it holds everything together. Then, weld the cylinder holder into frame so it remains tight and does not move.

Now it is time to wire everything together! First we will connect the hydraulic cylinder to the holder we've just welded. Then weld the metal pipes to the cylinder and the control valve. This is the place where the magic happens! Next you will link the hydraulic pump to the control valve and the cylinder. You should make sure that everything is connected as it should be. Now, you can test the hydraulic system once everything is set up. This is done by muting the control valve (pulling it up and down). That should get the cylinder to spin. When it does, it means you are doing well!

Now we need to add that wedge that will help split the wood! For this part a standard axe will do, or (preferably) a steel wedge. Weld the ram onto the wedge. Ensure that you have this tight and snug so it doesn’t loosen when you begin working the splitter. This is very essential and you will need a wedge to get an even and smooth split of the logs.

Now you are very close to complete your fantastic wood splitter! The final step: lay down some oil in your hydraulic system. This oil is what makes everything run smoothly. Now you are prepared to split some wood! You begin by putting a log on the bottom plate and ensure the splitting wedge is aligned with the log. Raise the cylinder with the control valve, which pushes the ram and wedge in the log. See how effortlessly and quickly the log splits! So satisfying to see your home moade wood splitter do its job!
